How to make hair mist (hair perfume)
Hair holds scent beautifully, but it doesn’t like strong alcohol. Learn to make a light, caring hair mist that smells great for hours and keeps hair soft.
Why hair needs its own mist
Normal perfume can dry hair. A hair mist is built differently.
Hair is porous and holds fragrance longer than skin, so you need less: usually 0.5–2% fragrance. High-alcohol perfumes can dry hair and make it frizzy, so hair mists are either water-based or contain only a little alcohol, plus ingredients that care for the hair.
0.5–2%: gentle and enough to last.
0–15% alcohol to help it dry and spread.
Panthenol, glycerin, hydrolysed proteins.
Water-based, so it always needs a preservative.
The formula
A clear, caring hair mist.

- Avoid very dark or heavy oils that may tint light or blonde hair.
- Test the fragrance’s IFRA limit for leave-on hair products with your supplier.
- Spray 15–20 cm from hair, on lengths rather than the scalp.
- Clarity and fridge test
Should stay clear when cold.
- Stability test
4–12 weeks at 40 °C, room temperature and in light.
- Hair test
Spray a lock of hair; check feel, scent after 4 and 8 hours, and any residue.

Questions, answered
Something not covered? Ask us and we will add it to the class.
Can I spray normal perfume on my hair?
Occasionally, but high-alcohol perfume can dry hair. A hair mist uses less fragrance and caring ingredients.
How long does a hair mist last?
Usually several hours, often longer than on skin, because hair holds fragrance well.
Does a hair mist need a preservative?
Yes. Any product containing water needs a broad-spectrum preservative.
