Jasmine Perfume Guide: Chambeli, Motia and Best Oils

Short answer: Jasmine is a white flower with a rich, sweet and slightly heady scent, and it sits at the heart of a huge number of perfumes. In Pakistan it’s chambeli, our national flower, and motia is its fatter, creamier cousin. Pick a jasmine fragrance oil if you want a floral that feels warm rather than powdery. Start with a fresh jasmine blend for daytime and a jasmine-with-amber oil for evenings.
What is jasmine in perfume, exactly?
Jasmine is a genus of shrubs and vines in the olive family, Oleaceae. Wikipedia lists around 200 species, native to warm parts of Asia, Africa and Oceania. Only a handful matter to perfumers.
In a perfume, jasmine is almost always a heart note. It shows up a few minutes after you apply, once the citrus top fades, and it stays for hours. If the idea of top, heart and base is new to you, our guide to fragrance notes explains it in five minutes.
The smell is sweet, honeyed and a little fruity, with a green edge. Good jasmine also has a faintly animal, skin-like warmth. That’s why it feels sensual rather than clean, and why it pairs so well with musk and amber.
Chambeli, motia and sambac: which jasmine is which?
The names get mixed up all the time, so here’s how we explain it in the shop.
Chambeli (Jasminum officinale)
This is Pakistan’s national flower. It has small, star-shaped white flowers and a lighter, airy scent. In perfume terms it reads fresh and pretty.
Motia and mogra (Jasminum sambac)
This is the thick, waxy jasmine sold in garlands and gajray. Wikipedia’s sambac page notes that its flowers open at night, usually around 6 to 8 in the evening, and grow in clusters of 3 to 12. It’s also Indonesia’s national flower, adopted in 1990, and it’s the flower used to scent jasmine tea. Sambac smells creamier and fruitier than chambeli, closer to what most people picture as attar-style jasmine.
Grandiflorum
Royal or Spanish jasmine is the classic French perfumery jasmine. Much of the jasmine used by the global perfume industry is grown around the village of Shubra Beloula in Egypt.
Natural jasmine is costly, so fragrance oils rebuild the scent from its key molecules. Sambac’s aroma includes compounds like benzyl acetate, linalool and methyl jasmonate, and perfumers balance these to make jasmine feel lighter or richer. Our fragrance oil explainer covers how that works.
What does jasmine smell like on skin?
On the strip it can feel loud. On skin it settles into something softer and warmer within about twenty minutes. In Lahore heat, jasmine opens up fast, so one or two dabs is plenty.
Tip: apply jasmine oil to pulse points, then wait ten minutes before judging it. The first few minutes are mostly the top notes, not the jasmine.

How do I wear and pair jasmine?
Jasmine is a team player. A few pairings we like:
- Jasmine and rose: the classic bridal floral. Our rose perfume guide covers the rose side.
- Jasmine and musk: clean, soft and close to skin. Great for daily wear.
- Jasmine and oud or amber: rich and festive, ideal for shaadi season. See our wedding perfume guide.
To combine two oils yourself, follow the steps in our perfume layering guide. Start with the lighter oil first, then add the heavier one on top.
Can I use jasmine oil for candles and diffusers?
Yes. Jasmine works well in soy candles and reed diffusers because its scent carries across a room. Lighter blends like Airgreen suit diffusers, and richer ones suit candles. Always check skin safety before using a home-fragrance oil on skin.
Questions we get a lot
Is jasmine a men’s or women’s scent?
Both. Jasmine leans feminine on its own, but blends with pepper, amber or oud wear well on men. Thomas Kosmala No. 4 style is a good unisex start.
What’s the difference between chambeli and motia?
Chambeli is Jasminum officinale, Pakistan’s national flower, with a lighter airy scent. Motia is Jasminum sambac, a thicker flower with a creamier, fruitier smell often used in garlands and attars.
How long does jasmine fragrance oil last?
Jasmine is a heart note, so it usually lasts several hours on skin, longer when paired with musk or amber. Our longevity guide has tips to stretch it.
Can I make a jasmine attar at home?
You can dilute or blend a jasmine fragrance oil into a roll-on. Our attar guide explains the traditional style and how to wear it.
