Bergamot & Citrus Notes in Perfume: A Simple Guide

5 min read

Sliced oranges, lemons and limes, the citrus fruits behind bergamot and citrus perfume notes

Short answer: Bergamot is the gentlest and most versatile citrus in perfume. It’s bright like lemon but softer, slightly floral and a little tea-like. If you want a clean, happy citrus oil for daily wear, start with a bergamot-led blend like Pure Air or CK One style, then try lemon, orange or orange blossom blends if you want something sharper or sweeter.

Citrus is the note people smell first and lose first. That’s why it confuses so many of our visitors in Lahore. They love the opening on a tester strip, then wonder where it went an hour later. This guide covers what each citrus note smells like, which ones last a bit longer, and which oils from our shelves suit women and unisex wear. If you’re after the blue, ambroxan-heavy men’s scents, we’ve already compared those in fresh men’s oils compared.

Why is bergamot in so many perfumes?

Bergamot has a long history in perfumery. According to Wikipedia’s Eau de Cologne page, the original cologne was launched in Cologne in 1709 by Giovanni Maria Farina. Its base was a mix of citrus oils such as lemon, orange, tangerine, clementine and bergamot. Colognes typically sit at 2–5% concentration in dilute ethanol of 70–90%. That’s why a classic cologne feels light and fades fast.

Bergamot earned its place because it’s the most rounded citrus. Lemon is sharp. Orange is sweet and juicy. Grapefruit is bitter. Bergamot sits in the middle, with a soft floral edge that blends easily with lavender, jasmine, musk and woods. Perfumers can put it in almost anything, from a summer splash to an oud.

What do the main citrus notes smell like?

Bergamot

Bright, slightly bitter, with a floral, Earl Grey-tea feel. Easy to wear and rarely loud.

Lemon and lime

Sharp, clean, zesty. Think freshly cut lemons or nimbu pani. Lovely in heat, but it’s the quickest to fade.

Orange and mandarin

Sweeter and juicier. Sweet orange feels cheerful and a bit fruity. It works well for women and for younger noses.

Neroli and orange blossom

These come from the flower, not the fruit. Wikipedia’s neroli page says neroli is produced from the blossom of the bitter orange tree, picked usually by hand in late April to early May and steam distilled. The name comes from a princess of Nerola in Italy who made it fashionable by the end of the 17th century. Neroli smells green, honeyed and clean. Orange blossom, its richer cousin, is sweeter and more floral. Both bridge citrus and florals, which is why you’ll see them in many women’s scents.

Why does citrus fade so fast, and how do you fix it?

Citrus molecules are small and light. They lift off the skin quickly, which is what makes them smell so bright in the first place. In our heat they go even faster. You can’t change the chemistry, but you can slow it down.

  • Pick a blend with a base. A citrus oil with musk, sandalwood or amber underneath, like CK One or Paradoxe style, keeps a soft trail after the zest goes.
  • Moisturise first. Oil holds better on hydrated skin than dry skin.
  • Top up, don’t overdo. A small roll-on in your bag beats five dabs in the morning.
  • Layer. A dab of musk or vanilla under a citrus oil makes it last longer. Our perfume layering guide has combinations.

There’s more on storage and wear time in how to make perfume last longer.

Some citrus oils can react with strong sunlight on skin. If you’ll be out in the midday sun, put citrus oils on clothes or on skin that’s covered, and read our fragrance safety guide first.

Is citrus only for summer?

No, though it does shine in May and June. A sharp lemon blend like Lemon Lime suits the hottest days, and our summer fragrance oils list has more. In winter, go for citrus with warmth behind it. Paradoxe style, with pear, orange blossom and amber, feels cosy in December. Orange with neroli also works year round because it’s sweet rather than icy.

Questions we get a lot

What does bergamot smell like?

Bergamot smells like a softer, slightly floral lemon with a hint of bitterness. It’s the citrus note in Earl Grey tea.

Which citrus perfume oil lasts the longest?

Citrus blends with a heavier base last longest. From our picks, Paradoxe style with amber and CK One style with sandalwood hold on better than pure lemon blends.

Is bergamot a men’s or women’s note?

It’s both. Bergamot opens many men’s scents and many women’s scents, and it suits unisex blends like CK One style very well.

What’s the difference between neroli and orange blossom?

Both come from bitter orange flowers. Neroli is steam distilled and smells green and clean, while orange blossom smells sweeter and more floral.
