How to Smell Expensive: 7 DIY Tricks With Fragrance Oil

5 min read

Short answer: How to smell expensive comes down to three things: the right notes, the right amount and the right prep. Pick soft woods, amber, musk or iris over sugary fruit. Use one or two dabs of a concentrated fragrance oil on moisturised skin, not a cloud of spray. Then make it last with a few simple DIY tricks you can do at home tonight.

What does “smelling expensive” actually mean?

Smelling expensive means wearing a scent that feels smooth, balanced and close to the skin, so people notice it when they come near you rather than from across the room. It’s a feeling, not a price tag. A Rs 600 oil worn well can smell richer than a costly perfume sprayed ten times.

The phrase took off on TikTok. Cosmopolitan reported the “how to smell expensive” trend has passed 35 million views, and the scents people keep naming, like Baccarat Rouge 540 and Santal 33, share the same traits: woody, airy and soft rather than loud and sugary.

Which notes make a perfume smell expensive?

Notes that smell expensive are creamy woods (sandalwood, cedar, cashmere wood), modern amber, clean musks and powdery florals like iris and neroli. These notes feel warm and polished and they sit well on skin for hours.

  • Creamy woods: sandalwood and cedar read calm and grown-up. Our sandalwood guide explains the different styles.
  • Musk: white musk smells like clean skin. See our musk guide.
  • Amber and ambergris-style notes: warm and slightly salty. Our amber vs ambergris post clears up the difference.
  • Iris: soft, powdery and very “old money”.

What makes a perfume smell cheap?

Perfumes smell cheap when they’re overly sweet or harsh: candyfloss accords, fake-tasting peach or strawberry, and heavy vanilla with nothing to balance it. Sweet scents aren’t banned, they just need a woody or musky base underneath.

DIY tricks to smell expensive with fragrance oil

These seven tricks cost little and work with any fragrance oil you already own.

  1. Moisturise first. Fragrance fades faster on dry skin. Rub in an unscented lotion, then apply your oil on top.
  2. Use less than you think. Fragrance oil is concentrated. One dab on each wrist and one at the base of the neck is enough. More just smells loud.
  3. Go for warm pulse points. Behind the ears, the nape, inside the wrists and elbows. Body heat lifts the scent gently through the day.
  4. Scent a scarf or shawl, carefully. A tiny dab on the inside hem of a dupatta, scarf or coat lining keeps the scent going. Test on a hidden spot first, as oils can mark light or silk fabrics.
  5. Layer a musk underneath. A clean musk under a woody or floral oil makes it smoother and longer lasting. Our perfume layering guide shows how.
  6. Make your own “expensive” spray. Turn your oil into a soft perfume spray using our make perfume at home recipe. Blenders often add a touch of Iso E Super for that velvety, woody halo.
  7. Store it well. Keep oils away from heat and sunlight so they don’t turn sharp. Our longevity guide covers storage.

Tip: in Lahore or Karachi heat, apply in the morning before you step out, not in the car at noon. Hot skin throws scent out fast, so one dab goes further than you’d expect.

What is Iso E Super and why does it smell expensive?

Iso E Super is a synthetic woody aroma molecule with a smooth, velvety amber feel, and it’s a big reason many modern scents smell polished. Wikipedia notes it was patented by International Flavors and Fragrances in 1975 and made up 11.7% of the fragrance portion of Calvin Klein Eternity. It lasts long on skin and fabric. We sell Iso E Super in 100g packs (Rs 1,800) in our aroma chemicals range, for people who blend their own sprays. Read our fragrance safety notes before blending anything for skin.

Is fragrance oil better than spray for smelling expensive?

Fragrance oil is often better for smelling expensive because it sits close to the skin and doesn’t blast out alcohol in the first minutes. Wikipedia’s perfume page lists parfum or extrait at 15 to 30% aromatic compounds and eau de parfum at 15 to 20%, while eau de toilette is only 5 to 15%. Oils give you that rich extrait feel in a small dab. Our oil vs spray comparison goes deeper.

Questions we get a lot

Can a cheap perfume smell expensive?

Yes. How a perfume is worn matters as much as its price. A well-balanced fragrance oil, applied lightly on moisturised skin, can smell richer than a costly spray used heavily.

How do I smell expensive all day?

Moisturise first, apply fragrance oil to warm pulse points, and add a tiny dab to a scarf or shawl lining. Layering a clean musk underneath also helps the scent last longer.

What perfume notes smell rich?

Sandalwood, cedar, amber, clean musk, iris and neroli are the notes most often described as rich or expensive. Overly sugary or fake-fruit notes tend to smell cheap.

How much fragrance oil should I apply?

One dab on each wrist and one at the neck is plenty for most fragrance oils. Oils are concentrated, so start small and add more only if you can’t smell it after twenty minutes.
