Rose Perfume Guide: Damask Rose, Rose Oil and Five Rose Styles

Short answer: the rose used in fine perfume is mostly the Damask rose, grown in Bulgaria’s Valley of Roses, Turkey’s Isparta region and Iran. Rose oil is mainly citronellol and geraniol, but its real character comes from tiny trace notes. In a perfume oil, rose can smell fresh and green, jammy and sweet, or deep and smoky when paired with oud. Pick by the pairing, not just the word “rose”.
Rose has been part of life in our region for centuries, from gulab jamun and gulkand to rose attar at weddings. Here’s how to choose a rose scent you’ll actually wear.
The Damask rose: perfume’s favourite flower
The Damask rose is a cultivated hybrid that isn’t found in the wild. It’s pink, intensely scented and grown in long hedges for distilling. The main growing regions are:
- Bulgaria: the “Valley of Roses” near Kazanlak and Karlovo.
- Turkey: the Isparta region, where a state cooperative controls distilling and quality.
- Iran: a major rose oil producer, where the Damask rose is the national flower.
The harvest is short and done by hand, lasting up to a month in cool weather and 16 to 20 days in hot weather. The same flowers give rose water and gulkand, the rose-petal preserve made with sugar. Why so many petals are needed for so little oil is covered in our fragrance oil vs essential oil guide.
What rose oil is made of
The interesting part is the tiny gold bar. Beta-damascenone makes up at most 1.85% of rose oil, yet it’s treated as the marker of quality. A trace material shapes how “rosy” the whole oil smells. Perfumers use the same idea to build rose accords from a handful of well-chosen materials.

How to wear rose
- Daytime and summer: fresh rose or rose attar. Rose is one of the traditional “cool” attars.
- Weddings and Eid: rose with oud or saffron. See our wedding perfume guide for event-by-event picks.
- Evenings and winter: rose with amber or oud.
- For men: rose with oud, saffron or woods reads warm and confident, not floral.
Questions we get a lot
Is rose a women’s scent?
No. Rose and oud is a much-loved combination for men across the Gulf and South Asia. It depends on what the rose is paired with.
What is Taif rose?
Taif rose is a name used for the Damask rose grown around Taif in Saudi Arabia, prized for its intense scent. You’ll see it as a note in many Arabian-style oils.
Why does some rose smell “old-fashioned”?
Usually it’s powdery rose with lots of violet or iris. Fresher rose with citrus or musk feels much more modern.
Can I use rose oil in rose water at home?
Fragrance oil doesn’t dissolve in water, so it will float. For a room or linen spray, use a proper base. Never add fragrance oil to food.
